E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company a chemical company, was founded in 1802. The DuPont Company celebrated its 150th anniversary on July 18, 1952, on the site of the original Eleutherian Mills. This item is a black and white photograph of the 150th Anniversary time capsule being buried at Eleutherian Mills.

1998 DuPont Company Top Gun Award calendar

Abstract:

DuPont Performance Coatings, Inc., was created in March 1999 by the merger of DuPont Automotive Finishes, a business unit of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, and Herberts GmbH, the coatings subsidiary of the German chemical firm Hoechst AG. Automotive Finishes had once been part of DuPont's Automotive Products Dept., and DuPont had a long history in automotive finishes. Every year, DuPont invited users of the company's automotive paint products to submit photos of their work. Winners were chosen and their projects were featured in an annual calendar. The vehicles pictured in this calendar won the DuPont Top Gun Award for 1997. All are painted with DuPont Company automobile finishes.

Apollo 15 was the fourth manned lunar landing mission. The three-man crew was made up of David R. Scott (1932-), Alfred J. Worden (1932-), and James B. Irwin (1930-1991). The E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. DuPont materials were used in whole or in part for twenty of the twenty-one layers of the Apollo spacesuits. This is a NASA photograph of James Irwin on moon, August 1, 1971. Attached are strips naming the twenty-one different layers of his space suit.

The Cavalcade of America was an anthology drama radio program which aired weekly from 1935 to 1953. The radio show was sponsored by the DuPont Company, a chemical company, which began as a manufacturer of gunpowder in 1802. The DuPont Company created the Cavalcade of America as a promotional tool. The program dramatized historical events focusing on individual stories of heroism, and occasionally presented a musical performance. This collection contains recordings of most of the show's episodes and consists of over 2,900 phonograph albums, approximately 500 sound tape reels, 6 sound cassettes and one scrapbook.

The collection consists of photographs relating to the Cavalcade of America radio show. The majority are views of rehearsals or live performances; actors and actresses, including numerous Hollywood celebrities such as Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball, and Cary Grant; the DuPont Chorus; live audiences; and the production staff.

The Cavalcade of America television show was an anthology drama which aired on NBC from 1952 to 1953 and ABC from 1953 to 1957. The show was adapted from a radio show of the same name sponsored by the DuPont Company, a chemical company, which began as a manufacturer of gunpowder in 1802.This collections consists of two reels of television commercials for various DuPont products. The commercials feature various spokesmen talking about or demonstrating the products. One commercial features DuPont Company president Crawford Greenewalt.

Charles H. DeMirjian (1925-) was a packaging design manager with E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. He collected pictures, advertisements, and publications showing DuPont consumer products, as well as some of the products and packages themselves. The collection consists of brochures, advertisements, photographs, and ephemera showing DuPont Company consumer products from 1913 to 1984.

Crawford H. Greenewalt (1902-1993) was an executive with the DuPont Company and president of the firm from 1948 to 1962. The collection consists of photographs and other materials related to Crawford Greenewalt's career with the DuPont Company and his involvement with corporate boards and other business and scientific organizations, etc., such as Boeing, M.I.T., Smithsonian Institution, and Radio Free Europe.

Crawford Hallock Greenewalt (1902-1993) was a chemical engineer and the President of the DuPont Company from 1948 to 1962. The collection consists of photographs relating to the career of Crawford H. Greenewalt. The album consists of photographs of a trip Greenewalt made to Argentina in 1956 related to expansion plans for the Ducilo plant. The views were primarily taken at the Buenos Aires airport and at a banquet meeting.

Crawford Hallock Greenewalt (1902-1993) was a chemical engineer and the President of the DuPont Company from 1948 to 1962. He had a passion for the natural sciences, and combined his love of ornithology with photography. He was especially known for his high speed photographs of hummingbirds. The bulk of the collection consists of nature films shot by Greenewalt, primarily of hummingbirds. The collection is divided into three series: Nature films, DuPont films and Sound recordings.

Originally established as a black powder manufactory in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834). Throughout the 1900s and 1910s, the company shifted its focus away from gunpowder production and towards chemistry innovations. This collection consists of five large poster boards which created displays of original magazine advertisements of various DuPont Company products such as Smokeless gunpowder, DUCO, Pyralin, synthetic fibers, Conoco oil, lucite, anti-freeze, cellophane and carpet fibers. This collection also contains one film.

Throughout the 1900s and 1910s, the company shifted its focus away from gunpowder production and towards chemistry innovations. This collection contains twenty photographs of DuPont Company exhibits and exhibit areas in Atlantic City, New Jersey in the Chalfonte-Haddon Hall, as well as exterior views in the vicinity of the Hall and views of the boardwalk at North Carolina Avenue. Chalfonte-Haddon Hall was a hotel and convention center that had its start as two Quaker boarding houses built in the 1860s.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834). This collection of more than 1250 discrete photographs depicts the landscape and buildings at or near the company's explosives manufacturing plants along Brandywine Creek near Wilmington, Delaware. Approximately 900 images depict powder yard sites, including the DuPont Experimental Station, either during the mills' final decades of operation or prior to, during, and after excavation and restoration work on the site in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of the remaining images depict the worker communities which surrounded the powder yards.

The illustrators who created these calendars--Stanley Massey Arthurs (1877-1950), Clyde Osmer DeLand (1872-1947), Gayle Porter Hoskins (1887-1962), and Frank Earle Schoonover (1877-1972)--were all artists who studied under Howard Pyle (1853-1911) at the turn of the twentieth century.

This collection also includes a variety of advertisements for the DuPont Company as well as other non-DuPont related trades. A large portion of this collection are oversize materials (panoramic photographs and advertising posters).

Ponsol is the DuPont trade name of a line of anthraquinone vat dyes first commercially produced in the United States in 1919. The poster shows a woman in a blue sweater holding a branch of cherry blossoms. Chinese legend around the sides of the image translates Fabrics dyed in Ponsol never fade.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly known as the DuPont Company. DuPont's Advertising Department was formed in September 1921, when the company was reorganized with a decentralized structure. The Advertising Department was responsible for assisting the company in promoting and advertising the work of the other departments, including the Textile Fibers Department. The Textile Fibers Department of the DuPont Company was established in 1936 as the Rayon Department, which specialized in researching and developing synthetic fibers for fabrics. This photograph album highlights the facilities and processes of the DuPont Company's synthetic textile fibers manufacturing and research. The album was likely created by the Advertising Department between 1945 and 1968. Each photograph is accompanied by text describing the image. The album is divided into seven sections: Nylon, Orlon, Dacron, Acetate, Lycra, Chestnut Run, and All Fibers.

In 1952, the DuPont Company organized a Product Information section within the Public Relations Department. Its main purpose was to create news releases accompanied by photographs that would be run editorially by trade journals and newspapers to create inexpensive publicity and indirect advertising. This collection consists of the Fabric master files and Textile reference files maintained by the Product Information Department. The majority of the photographs in the Fashion master files are posed fashion images featuring women modeling clothing made from DuPont synthetic fibers. There are images that feature children’s and men’s clothing as well. The fashion categories have been used as subseries and are as follows: Children and teens; Dress wear; Exports; Home furnishing; Home sewing/fashion fabrics; Hosiery; Intimate apparel; Italian couture; Knit wear; Men’s wear; New York couture; Paris couture; Sportswear/activewear; Swimwear; Touring kits; and Uniforms. Textile reference files contain press releases organized by fiber and then chronologically. The subseries are: Acetate, Dacron, Lycra, Multi-Fibers, Nylon, Orlon, Rayon, Reemay and Zepel.

DuPont Duco-Dulux advertising and sales aid

Chemists at DuPont’s Parlin, New Jersey laboratory produced a pyroxylin lacquer in 1920 called Viscolac and improved upon it in the following years and renamed it Duco. In the late 1920s Dulux was developed, which was an alkyd finish and had a higher gloss finish; a matte version of Dulux was also developed. This collection is a packet of advertising and sales aids for dealers of DuPont Duco and Dulux paints and finishes.

DuPont introduced its first reverse osmosis permeators for water desalination in 1969 under the trade name "Permasep" as a result of its contusion research in polymer chemistry and synthetic fibers. The collection documents the manufacture and operational use of the Permasep® product line. The collection consists of photographs, slides, videocassettes, and marketing materials that document the DuPont Company's involvement in the Permasep® product line. The bulk of the collection are slides of desalination plant views, including interior and exterior views. This collection includes slide presentations, brochures, and videocassettes promoting Permasep®. Researchers interested in industrial reverse osmosis systems may find this collection useful.

Edward B. du Pont (1934-2017) was vice president of the Wilmington Trust Company, served on numerous boards of directors, and was descended from the founders of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. This small collection documents Edward B. du Pont's service on the boards of directors for the DuPont Company, Atlantic Aviation, and the Hagley Museum and Library, as well as the board of trustees for the University of Delaware, primarily through group portraits. His work for the DuPont Company is most heavily represented. The collection is arranged chronologically. The majority of images date from 1977 to 2003.

Edward M. Harrington collection of Aetna Powder Company and DuPont Company material

Edward M. Harrington (1866-1933) was a chemist and expert on blasting cap design. He held several positions at the Aetna Powder Company, eventually becoming superintendent of the dynamite works at Aetna, Indiana. Harrington then went on to work for the DuPont Company at various plants in the Operating Department until his retirement in 1921. Images in this collection are of dynamite and other explosive plants, including Aetna Powder Company plants in Newport, Rhode Island (electric blasting caps) and Aetna, Indiana, and DuPont Company plants in Repauno, New Jersey; Hopwell, Virginia, and many other locations. Photographs show buildings, office and plant interiors, many with workers, employee groups, housing, and recreation.

Abstract:

The Jackson Laboratory and the Technical Laboratory was established by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company at its Deepwater, New Jersey, in 1917 and 1920 respectively to manufacture and research dyes. This collection consists of two panoramic photographs of exteriors of the laboratories.

Abstract:

The War Department of the United States Government contracted with the DuPont Company to build and run a smokeless powder plant called the Old Hickory plant on the Cumberland River near Nashville, Tennessee during World War I. These panoramic photographs show overall views of DuPont Company's Old Hickory smokeless powder plant, also views of exterior and interior details.

Abstract:

In 1902 the DuPont Company acquired the Smith Electric Fuze Company and some other properties in the Pompton Lakes, New Jersey area. DuPont continued the manufacture of fuses, blasting caps, and other blasting supplies at the plant, adding a shell plant and other facilities. One panoramic photograph shows an overview of the DuPont Company plant at Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, 1918, and the other is a group portrait of staff, August 25, 1943.
